The name Macleod represents so much to our great City and our employees. We have been around a while. We are proudly Calgarians. When we think of Macleod’s, we think of the responsibility to represent amazing contribution to the City. 

The name Macleod in Calgary has major historical significance as it is named after one of the founding families of the city – the Macleod family. 

The Macleods were a prominent Scottish family who migrated to Canada in the mid-19th century and played a crucial role in the development of Calgary and the surrounding area. It is reported that the Macleod family was headed by Lieutenant Colonel James Macleod, who was a notable figure in the Canadian military and served as the Commissioner of the North-West Mounted Police in the late 1800s. Macleod was instrumental in establishing law and order in the region and played a key role in negotiating treaties with First Nations communities in the area.

In recognition of his contributions, the Canadian Pacific Railway named a station after him in 1884 when the railway reached the area that would become Calgary. The station was located near where the Macleod Trail is today, and the name “Macleod” stuck, eventually becoming the name of the trail itself and the surrounding area.

Today, the Macleod Trail is one of the busiest roads in Calgary, running north-south through the city and connecting the downtown area with the southern suburbs. The name Macleod is still a prominent one in the city, with many businesses and landmarks bearing the name in honour of the Macleod family’s contributions to the city’s history.
